After School Launches LGBTQ+ Support Campaign with The Trevor Project
After School’s Change 💩 campaign has helped raise awareness of important issues among teenagers across America. Campaign efforts have focused on starting conversations among teens by providing information and asking them poll questions on topics including voting and civic engagement, bullying, and more. After School is proud to announce our newest initiative, which centers around providing support to LGBTQ+ classmates.
After School is the largest teen-focused social network with established online communities in over 90% of all U.S. high schools. After School allows teens to remain anonymous after verifying their attendance at their high school, giving them the ability to freely share without worrying about keeping up appearances or curating their online image. This has resulted in teenagers sharing secrets, questions, and more from pregnancy concerns to asking how they should come out as gay to their parents.
With 42% of LGBTQ+ youth stating that their local communities are not supportive of LGBTQ+ people, ensuring that their online communities are is important. Teaming up with The Trevor Project, After School will launch the LGBTQ+ support drive in mid-December. Questions students will be asked include:
- Would you support a friend if they came out as LGBTQ+?
- Do you already have a friend who is LGBTQ+?
Teen users, who are active high school students in the United States, will then be given the opportunity to learn how to best support LGBTQ+ classmates and provided with TrevorLifeline and Crisis Text Line information.
